Iceland Day 3

 Tuesday

The hotel buffet here is much more varied than our typical US Hilton stay. They offer different breads, croissants, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, bananas, oranges, melons, corn flakes, Skyr (Icelandic yogurt), Chia seed pudding, scrambled eggs, bacon, beans, oatmeal, juices. I think I got it all.

This is a picture I took from our hotel room because the sun was shining! Then I sat down on my bed and Shelley told me it was gone. So I took the second picture to show how quickly the storms come.

Our first activity today was snorkeling in the Silfra fissure in Thingvellir National Park. Silfra fissure is the separation between the two tectonic plates (like yesterday) but underwater. The water is about 35 degrees, so we get geared up in dry suits. Kent wasn't interested in this activity, so he hung out in the car. They have to be sure that no water leaks in to us, so that add an extra strap around our wrists and neck. It feels uncomfortable and we all voiced our opinions. Once we're in the water though it feels a bit better. Our lips are numb but that means no pain soon. It was very clear water and our suits made us buoyant so we didn't have to try too hard. We got our pictures taken with one hand on the North America plate and one on the Eurasia plate. It was all great fun until I got vertigo and soon wanted to puke my guts out. Our sweet guide, Elsa, said that it happens often. I just had to turn on my back and let her drag me to the exit. I made it through getting back, changing back into my clothes and walking to the road for the car before I tossed my cookies. After that, laying down, and taking some meds while we drove to our next activity, I felt back to normal.

Next stop was in the "Geysir" area. There are a few geysers, and geothermal pools. The Strokur geysir is even bigger than Old Faithful when it erupts which is every 20 something years. Fortunately, another geyser there is a little more predictable. It erupts every 5 minutes or so. It was nice weather there, until it wasn't. Shelley wasn't wearing her snow pants yet, so when it started to pelt hail at us she was shrieking a bit. Later she found a burst blood vessel on her leg from the hail! Ouch!

Then we went to Gulfoss Waterfall.

We stopped at Barnloft for burgers in a town called Efstidalur II. The place has there own cow farm and we could watch the dairy cows eating from the bottom level of the restaurant. McKinley got some farm fresh strawberry ice cream for dessert.

We finished off the rest of the Golden Circle Road on our way back to our hotel. The weather once again acted up with some crazy snow squalls where at some points we could only see from one road marker to the next. The weather here is no joke. We called the hotel to check on our Northern Lights tour tonight, yup it's canceled again due to weather.

We headed to bed early tonight because tomorrow we have to leave by 4:30 for our next excursion.

Iceland Day 2

This is the official start of the fun parts of our trip. After landing, we got our rental car. There was a big storm going on and we had to hold on to our car doors for dear life so they didn't snap off their hinges! We couldn't check in to our hotel yet, so we decide to check out the Perlan museum in Reykjavik. It's inside and out of all the crazy weather. There were exhibits about the northern lights, glaciers, ice caves, volcanoes, and good general info about Iceland.

Then we head to the Blue Lagoon for our 1:00 pm reservation.  It was so cold and windy outside, but the water in the lagoon was so warm and blue. If it weren't for the raging waves at times, and the hail pelting our heads, it would have been completely relaxing. Considering those conditions, it was mostly relaxing. They have a couple steam rooms, warm waterfall, sauna, and face masks. The lagoon is heated by Iceland's natural geothermal waters.

After we had our fill at the Blue Lagoon, we at in Grindavik at a place called Belgaards. It's a little cafe off the harbor. We tried lobster soup with bread, Icelandic hot dog, and grilled ham and cheese.

After lunch we stopped by Reykjanesviti lighthouse. The Atlantic ocean waves were ferocious! It looked like decent weather as we got out, checked out the Eurovision filming spot we stumbled upon by coincidence and fake played the pianos. Then we were pelted once again by the quick changing weather and ran to our car.

Next, we stopped at the continental bridge. This bridge was built over the fissure that lies between the two diverging tectonic plates here (the North America and Eurasian plates).

We headed back to Reykjavik to check in to our hotel and to see about our Northern Lights tour. The tour was canceled due to the weather tonight.

There were murals all over the city. This is one we could see out our hotel window.

Iceland Day 1-2

What a start to the trip. We were about to load up our luggage and leave the house. It's about 8:43 pm and Shelley is on her way. We plan to arrive to the airport around 9 pm for our 11 pm red eye flight to JFK.

Then I get a text from Delta. Our flight is canceled due to weather in NY. Well, needless to say panic set in and we were scrambling for alternatives. Our next day flight to Iceland was scheduled to leave at 8:25 pm and we just needed to make it by then.

Kent's brother knew a lady who works at Delta, and after much hard work on her part, got us on a flight to Seattle that night. We left our house at 10:00 pm and our flight was scheduled to take off at 10:43. We booked it through the airport and huffed and puffed through our masks, but we made it! Off to Seattle!

We spent about 3 hours that night in a hotel bed and then woke up early to leave on our new Seattle to JFK flight at 7:25 am landing around 3 pm. We hung out at the airport until our Iceland Air red eye flight that departed at 8:25 pm landing in Iceland around 6:30 am.

We are so tired, but so grateful that we made it!!!

Confuzzled

Josh got this puzzle for Christmas that I finally got out. It was 759 pieces of a Ratzenburger puzzle which is a puzzle you put together then figure out the clues at the end to "escape" and solve the scenario.

The puzzle took us many days, but we did it.

We never did figure out the clues. Even when I got the online help. It was a level 2 difficulty level. Yikes.

Legislative session

It was the last night of the Utah State Legislative Session. As part of the Utah PTA we were watching and advocating for many bills. Tonight we got together as a few specialists, president, commissioners, and VPs, to eat some dinner and watch some legislation.

Some times were filled with productivity and goodness, while others were filled with wasteful "sauntering" and political games which was very frustrating and disappointing to me.

I went home around 12:30 am.
